Dark purple knapweed owes its name to the deep purple flower heads, which contrast strikingly with the surrounding green. As well as attracting attention, these vibrant flowers attract a wide range of pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making them an excellent choice for bee hives and wildlife gardens. Its attractive flowers and upright growth make it a popular choice for herbaceous borders, borders and wildflower meadows. It offers a long-lasting display of colour and form from early summer through to autumn. The genus Centaurea, to which the dark purple knapweed belongs, has a long cultural and medical history. Many species have been used in traditional medicine, and the name is thought to derive from the mythological figure of Chiron, a Zentaur known as a healer.
